The games of war have been around for centuries.  They were used to prepare troops and commanders for battle.  Because real weapons are not a good choice for drills, other alternatives needed to be developed.  In 1981 Bob Gurnsey, Hayes Noel, Charles Gaines and nine others chose to play a game using markers that were intended for cattle and trees.

Paintball guns are now used to shoot paintballs at other players. The bullets used for each shot is a .68 caliber gelatin capsule which comes in various colors so that one team can distinguish the shots they fire from those of the opposition and even from player to player. If you are hit then you are out of the game.

There are many different types of games that can be played using paintballs.  One of the most popular is capture the flag.  In this version of the game each team has a flag that the other must capture to win.  In other version there is only one flag and the teams try to be the first to capture it.  Another way of winning is of course to eliminate all of the opposing players by hitting them with paintballs.

The size of the paintball field can vary from a small wooded area to an area as small as the size of a basketball court.  Some games use just natural cover and others will construct obstacles and cover.

Large scale battles have been played with over 3,000 participants on 700 acres of land.  The sport can be as demanding as you want to make it.

Official tournaments are held around the world.  Teams consist of from 3 to 10 players.  Rules will vary from tournament to tournament so check before entering.

Safety gear is required to protect the players.  Generally it will consist of a helmet, chest pad, gloves, and knee and elbow pads.  The maximum velocity of the 300 feet per second for guns will keep the paintball impact down.

Paintball is gaining ground around the world.  According to studies it is the 3rd most popular extreme game in the world.  It is considered safe as long as proper equipment is used and the rules are followed.  Check out your local club and sign up to join in the fun.
